چکیده

The qualitative similarities between water and silica have long been appreciated [1,2]. The molecular structure of both substances is dominated by tetrahedral bonding arrangements under ambient pressure, in both the liquid and the solid states. As a consequence, several of the low-pressure ice phases have isomorphic analogs among the crystalline phases of silica (e.g., ice Ih and tridymite). The similarities between water and silica also extend to the properties of the liquid and amorphous solid forms. Water and silica are both members of a small set of substances that exhibit a density maximum in the liquid phase [1,2].

Liquid polyamorphism: Possible relation to the anomalous behaviour of water

We present evidence from experiments and computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water displays polyamorphism, i.e., water separates into two distinct liquid phases. This concept of a new liquid-liquid phase transition is finding application to other liquids as well as water, such as silicon and silica. Specifically, we investigate, the relation between changes in dynamic and thermo...

Liquid Polyamorphism: Some Unsolved Puzzles of Water in Bulk, Nanoconfined, and Biological Environments

We investigate the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point in (i) Two models of water, TIP5P and ST2, which display a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures; (ii) the Jagla model, a spherically symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the c...

Molecular structural order and anomalies in liquid silica.

The present investigation examines the relationship between structural order, diffusivity anomalies, and density anomalies in liquid silica by means of molecular dynamics simulations. We use previously defined orientational and translational order parameters to quantify local structural order in atomic configurations. Extensive simulations are performed at different state points to measure stru...

An ubiquitous mechanism for water-like anomalies

Using collision driven molecular dynamics a system of spherical particles interacting through an effective two length scales potential is studied. The potential can be tuned by means of a single parameter, λ, from a ramp (λ = 0.5) to a square-shoulder potential (λ = 1.0) representing a family of two length scales potential in which the shortest interaction distance has higher potential energy t...

Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition and Glass Transition in a Monoatomic Model System

We review our recent study on the polyamorphism of the liquid and glass states in a monatomic system, a two-scale spherical-symmetric Jagla model with both attractive and repulsive interactions. This potential with a parametrization for which crystallization can be avoided and both the glass transition and the liquid-liquid phase transition are clearly separated, displays water-like anomalies a...
